Profiles in Resilience: Barbara Rinto, Director, University of Cincinnati Women's Center
To Barbara Rinto, resilience is about understanding your values and through trial and error figuring out how to stay true to those values over a lifetime. She says when she was a child her parents served as a very good example of resilience and taught her to pursue her goals even in a male-dominated society. “At a young age, I realized that as a girl your well-being was often secondary to that of boys. If the two were seen in conflict, the girl often resilience lost out,” says Rinto. “Luckily, I had parents who did not agree with this and I benefited from their wisdom and values by being encouraged to play sports, to excel in school, to find a career, and to defer marriage until I was truly ready. Their support provided me an example that I could call on when I was pressured or made to feel ‘less’ because of my aspirations and life choices,” she says.
